CUNY CONFERENCE ON THE SEGMENT IN PHONOLOGY
Sponsored by the CUNY Phonology Forum and the MA/PhD Program in
Linguistics at the City University of New York
January 11th-13th, 2012 at the CUNY Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Avenue, New York City
Hotel Information
There is no designated hotel with whom the conference has arrangements. However, it should not be too difficult to find a hotel within a short distance of
the CUNY Graduate Center. The conference is not taking place at the peak season, so prices at least will not be
at their highest; actually, some real bargains are available. If you have a favorite hotel search engine, by
all means experiment with it. We put the phrase “cheap hotels in New York City” into a search engine and
received a lot of useful information.
The New York Times had an article on May 1, 2010, about hotels with small, inexpensive rooms in New York City that conference participants might find of interest.
It was entitled "Sleep Tight? In These New York Hotels, There Is No Other Way." (This information changes rapidly, so some of it may be out of date already.)
The website Newyorkology.com also has listings and reviews of inexpensive hotels and hostels, as well as a lot of other
interesting and useful information about enjoying and getting around in the city.
Below are a few relatively inexpensive hotels that have been recommended before and are in reasonable
walking distance of the graduate center:
The Carlton Arms
The Gershwin Hotel.
Hotel 31.
Hotel Wolcott.
The Pod Hotel.
Hotel Stanford (a bit pricier than the others).
The Murray Hill Inn.
The Jane Hotel.
Webster Apartments. Women only.
This is a real bargain; three night minimum stay -- book early!
There are also several hostels in New York. Some of these advertise as having private rooms, as well as dorm-style rooms. Here are a few:
Our Location, Getting Around and Enjoying the City
The CUNY Graduate Center is at 365 Fifth Avenue, New York City, New York 10016. It occupies a landmark
building of some historical
interest. The building is on the East Side of Fifth Avenue, filling the entire block between 34th and 35th streets, diagonally opposite
the Empire State Building. The neighborhood we are in is called Murray Hill.
We are easy to find on Google Earth: zoom in on the Empire State Building, and we are the large building you see
immediately to the NorthEast, diagonally across 34th Street and Fifth Avenue.
Directions to the Graduate Center, including map links, are
here; scroll down to "How to Get Here."
A map of the New York City Subway system is here. And
information about bus transportation in New York City is here.
As mentioned above, a useful guide for visitors is Newyorkology.com.
You might also try the official NYC site: nyc.gov, and
navigate to the visitors' link.
If you need any more information, please send a message to the conference email.
