Architecture and Representations in Phonological Theory

The field of phonology has not agreed on two important theoretical questions: How should phonological objects be represented? What is the optimal architecture for phonological theory? The CUNY Symposium on Architecture and Representation in Phonology was organized to probe these basic questions. This symposium, which took place February 20 - 21, 2004, led to a volume, co-edited by Eric Raimy and Charles Cairns, to be published by MIT and entitled Architecture and Representation in Phonology.

Please click here for a link to the original symposium.

Each chapter of the book Architecture and Representation in Phonology appears here with the illustrations and references in separate files from the text of each chapter. The first twelve chapters are posted in pdf format with the illustrations integrated into the text; they are accessible by clicking on the title of the chapter. The volume is divided into five categories, plus the introduction. Most of these five categories consist of a lead chapter followed by from one to three commentaries.
